The overall life expectancy of people who have epilepsy is the same as for anybody else if they are otherwise pretty healthy. Some people whose epilepsy is caused by things like a stroke or a brain tumor may die sooner from those conditions, of course.

Injuries sometimes come along with Uncontrolled Seizures. The average life span would be shorter in those cases.

Can you get epilepsy as an adult?

Can epilepsy be diagnosed prenatally?

It would be extremely difficult to do so. Epilepsy can start at any age. Unless there is some sort of family history there are not many reasons to suspect a baby will have epilepsy. It is possible, should a woman have some complications during a pregnancy like some infections, that something could happen to the baby which would result in epilepsy. However this is very rare and even then the onset of the epilepsy would be after they were born, maybe even later in childhood. If you have any concerns talk to a doctor.

What happens when someone with epilepsy sees flashing lights?

For most people with epilepsy, nothing will happen. A common misconception is that anyone that has epilepsy will have their seizures triggered when they see flashing lights. However, that is only for people with a form of epilepsy known as photosensitive epilepsy. That is only about 3% to 5% of people who have epilepsy. For the others, it has no effect whatsoever. Their seizures would be triggered by other factors. For those that do have photosensitive epilepsy then seeing flashing lights could start a seizure.
