There is no law about the age requirements. Parents have to take care of their children if they can't manage for themselves. It can be acceptable to have a chat at the door while your son of five is watching the Cartoons on TV, or to run a five-minute errand at the bakery while the twelve-year old daughter of the neighbour is watching the baby. It was normal for a child of eight to walk one mile to school thirty years ago, but walking alone a third of a mile is bordering on mistreament today, and no law has been passed or changed on that.

Should a problem arise, the judges will examine if you have been reasonable in your acts. If a child is not old enough to open the door, answer the phone or to have any sense of danger, keep an eye on him at any time.

In Germany, a child between the ages of 7 and 11 can stay home alone for up to 3 hours at a time. The child must have access to a phone to reach an adult though.

Can you leave a foster child home alone?

It would be essentially the same as if the child were your own: it depends on the age of the child and if the child is responsible enough to be left unsupervised, and how long he or she will be unsupervised. It is generally, not recommended, though, to leave a child under the age of 11 years.
