It is unknown exactly how old Mary was when she died. One can only estimate. It is believed that she was around 14 when the Archangel Gabriel came to her and told her that she would conceive "God's only Son". It is believed that Jesus Christ lived approximately 33 years, making Mary around 47 when He died. Just before his death on The Cross, Jesus, "willed" Mary to the care of St. John the Beloved. After His death, Mary and St. John lived the remainder of her life together in Ephesus (now modern day Turkey). Christian tradition states that she died between (surrounded by The Apostles) three and fifteen years after Christ Ascended into Heaven, making her somewhere between the ages of 50 and 62 when she died.
There is not Scriptural reference to the death of the Blessed Mother. The Dogma of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was declared infallibly in 1950 by Pope Pius XII. This is based on early church "T"radition held by by both the "Orthodox" and "Catholic" faith. Pius did not state definitely that married died and was assumed into heaven, as the "Orthodox" believe that she fell asleep first and was assumed into heaven.

This is impossible to say exactly. However, Mary would have been a teenage girl at the time of his birth. In Jewish Law in those days it was permissable for pubescent girls to marry and have children. As Jesus was Mary's firstborn (See the gospels of Luke and Matthew), and she was merely betrothed, not married, to Joseph when she became pregnant, it is unlikely that she would have been older than 13 - 15 at the time of the birth. If Jesus lived for around 33 years as is believed according to scripture, Mary would have been no more than 15 + 33 years - i.e. 48 at the time of his death. Hardly old in today's terms, but in those days, with life expectancy very low, she would have been regarded as 'getting on a bit' or even elderly. This is why, whilst on the Cross, Jesus charged his disciple John to look after her, after his ascension, in his own home.

In Biblical times, life expectancy was far less than it is today, with 40 being a relatively old age. We know that Mary was still alive at the time of Jesus' crucifixion, as she was present at the Cross along with the other witnesses. At the time of the Crucifixion Jesus was around 33, meaning that, unless Mary was a very old woman (relatively speaking) by that time, she had given birth to Jesus at a very early age by modern standards. The scriptures bear this out both in prophesies about Mary in Isaiah ("behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel - 'God with us') and also in Luke, which tells of the visit of the angel Gabriel to Mary to tell her that she is pregnant. Mary questioned the angel and could not understand her pregnancy "as I am still a virgin". A virginal girl in those days usually meant a girl who either had not started menstruating, or who had recently started, obtained, therefore, her 'state of womanhood', but who had yet to get married. In those days, it was quite normal for very young girls (by modern standards) to marry and have children. Menstruation today often starts at an even earlier age than then (because of better nutrition) but in those times once a girl had started to menstruate (say, at the age of 13-14 or so) this was a sign of her womanhood and her eligibility to marry and have children. Therefore, in Mary's case, weighing up the cultural, Biblical and chronological evidence, it is likely that she was somewhere in the region of 14-15 or so at the time of giving birth to Jesus, and certainly no older than 16 or 17.
I'm going to assume that this questioner means at the time she was pregnant with Jesus...

Scholars speculate that Mary probably only about 12 or 13 years old when she became pregnant with Jesus. This was not at all uncommon for a girl as young as 12 to be married off and start a family in those days.

It is difficult to say, but in those days they got married early, may be in their teens, so if we say she was roughly 18 years at her marriage we must add the 33 years Jesus lived so she could be 51 years old.

It is not recorded in the Scripture. The Bible's last mention of her, Mary is left to our memories in faithful prayer to God, awaiting her son's return (see Acts 1:14).

The Bible is quite clear that the fate of all mankind is death - Abraham, Moses, King David, Jesus Himself, and all others are 'sleeping' now awaiting their call to Judgment - except Jesus who became the first of the firstfruits to ascend into Heaven (see John 3:13), having been judged in His human lifetime and found worthy:

Hebrews 9:27New King James Version (NKJV)27 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,

We do not know if our Blessed Mother ever died or not, we only know that she ended her life and was assumed into heaven (not ascended, only Our Blessed Lord, being God, could ascend into heaven). We do not know her age, but it was a time after Our Blessed Lord ascended, so she would have been at least approaching 50 years old.

Why is the Hail Mary important to Roman Catholics?

Because Mary is the mother of Jesus, and Jesus is God. We don't worship her, we just talk to her and ask her to ask Jesus to help us.Roman Catholic AnswerThe Blessed Virgin Mary was given to each of us as our mother when Jesus, on the Cross, gave her to each of us in his disciple, John. She is the mediatrix of grace. Jesus is the Mediator of all grace, and only He is our savior. But God has decreed that each of us is to be a mediator in our own way, for instance when we pray for a family member in trouble. Mary is mother of Our Blessed Lord, and mother of the Church, so in a very real way, we turn to her and ask her intercession as she is the first intercessor after Jesus. This is most clearly prefigured in the Old Testament, in the Queen Mother, who was mother of the King and would intercede with the King. The Hail Mary is the primary prayer given to us to ask her intercession.
