In ancient Sparta, boys at the age of 7 were taken from their mothers and went to live in barracks to begin military training. At age 20, they were declared fully-trained soldiers and put on active duty. At age 30, Spartan soldiers no longer had to live in the barracks.At age 7, Spartan boys were taken from their mother and began military training. They lived in barracks with other boys.
Spartan men were encouraged to marry at the age of 20. Although, if they were not married by the age of 30, it became compulsory. Spartan men were not allowed to live at their homes until they have finished the 10 years of military service, starting at the age of 20. In these ten years, if they were married, they lived away from their home and in their barracks with the syssita. When they turned 30 they went into the reserve, and could move home.
