My daughter started riding when she was three months old (with me). She was solo by age four with me leading the horse. By eight she was on trails with well broke horses. BY ten she was in her first show with a pony.

The younger the better is a great start point. Age limit on upper end? I am 52 and have a 14.2 hand Percheron that I love o ride and will until I am too old to get up on it anymore.

There are no age limits.

Ponies come in all shapes, colors and sizes. As saddle horses most ponies will need a smaller rider. The rule of thumb is about 150 lbs. to 200 lbs. maximum weight for packing. That's way too heavy for all but the biggest ponies. Shetlands could easily carry a small child, 30 lbs. to 60 lbs. A larger pony of course can carry a larger child.

Once a child outgrows his/hers pony it doesn't mean you must find him a new home. He can be taught to pull a cart, and the weight limit is much higher when a load is pulled. An average size adult is not to heavy to ride in a pony cart.

Horses do NOT have ponies. Ponies are an entirely different category, which is based on size. Horses have foals, which are categorized as colts, or male foals, and fillies, or female ones. A pony is classified as small, medium or large, depending on the height. A horse MAY produce a pony if there young only grow to pony size. Your horse has to reach 2 and a half years old to be sexually mature. The same thing in truth. It MIGHT be a pony if the male is also a pony. You can test it on horse that if you have a connemara, and you choose a male mustang, you have a 60% chance getting a connemara and 40% chance getting a mustang.

a horse can only have a pony foal if it was bred to a small or medium pony other wise it is a big large a normal horse or a big horse

It depends on when your ready for an example how old you are the experience you have in riding also as in horses. Also where you are going to keep the horse because horses also as humans need food and shelter they also need care and for some one to care for a horse of there own. Hint: when you are ready to buy your first horse make sure that the horse that you are purchasing is the best horse for you and your family also it may help if you pick a friendly horse. Even if it is at a privet stable or a public stable, if it is a privet stable were not many people see and touch him/or her it would be best because if you are seeing it every day you would want a friendly horse or pony. But if the horse is at a public stable it would be best to get a friendly horse because many people would see and most likely to touch the horse and it may bite. So there are some handy hints when buying your very first horse/pony.

A:Some people have their first horse when they are younger than 3. How old you are doesn't really matter. The horse is what matters. For a beginner rider, it is probably better for you to go to a riding stable and get lessons on lesson horses for a while before getting your own horse. A riding instructor can also help you pick out a good horse for you.

How old does a horse have to be to be considered a horse?

With horses, it is not the age but the size that determines if it is a horse or a pony. If an equine is a horse, that means that it is over 14.3 hands high(hh). 1 hand equals 4 inches. If an equine is a pony, it means that it is 14.2 hh or under. Again, it is not the age but the size that makes and equine a pony or a horse. They can be any age and still be a pony. Some young horses are called foals (any horse under 1yr), yearlings (any horse that's about 1yr), colts, and fillies. Most horse people consider a horse an adult at age 4 years. Before the age of 4 years a horse is usually referred to as a filly if it is female, or a colt if it is male.

Does pony mean younger or smaller?

Pony is the term used to describe a horse under 14.2 hands high. If it is any higher, it is a horse. The term has nothing to do with age or gender.

When is a horse not a horse?

A horse under a certain number of hands (a unit of measurement) is called a pony. The correct term for a horse under four years of age is called a foal, if it is male then a colt and if it is a female, a filly. If a horse is 14.2hh (hands)or more, (144.272cm) then it is classed as a horse and cannot enter pony classes. If it is under 14.2hh (144.272cm) then it is classified as a pony. There are some horses and ponies that are just on the line and you can make them a horse or a pony by shoeing and hoof trimming.

Is a pony a type of horse?
