I am a long-time German Shepherd Dog (GSD) owner and can tell you that they are one of the most intelligent, yet territorial dog breeds in the world. As such, they have been placed on the "naughty list" by most insurance companies. This is something to keep in mind if you are considering adopting one. Back to your question, I believe that GSDs are born with a territorial instinct; however, their level of assertiveness and aggressiveness really depends on the environment in which they were raised. Eight months seems to be the age when GSDs become more aware of their surroundings and start to develop a "that's mine" attitude. It's best to introduce the breed to strangers early on, so that they do not develop a fear or become too aggressive. Set boundaries and make sure to stick to them. GSDs know how to problem solve. They also know how to get the upper hand. Good luck!

At any age. A pup with solid nerve will step forward and investigate when provoked rather than run and hide. A GSD with solid nerve will never assume someone or something is a threat. They will investigate or observe until it proves to be a threat. Like any mentally sound dog, they will attempt to protect their pack when it is threatened. The same can be said of just about any breed of dog from a Yorkie to an Irish Wolfhound.

If it's purebred about 9-11 years. Mine lived to be twelve but that's because she had strong will.
German Shepherd's have an estimate of 9-14 years depending on their purity and how well cared for they are.

The life span of the German Shepherd depends on the breed of Shepherd it is. It can be anywhere from 9 years, to about 15 years.
German Shepherd Dog can live up to 12-14 years.

As soon as a Shepherd feels your hoe is his home he will gradually start to bark more at noises that disturb him, of course if done correctly you can phase him out of barking at every creak but generally only if he is a puppy.

Do all dogs die at the same age but only the same dogs?

No. The same breeds of dogs have the same life span but they do not all die at the same age. For Example: The average life span of a German Shepherd is 7-10 years. I have had 3 German Shepherds. One died at 11, one died at 9, and one died at 7.
