The Fastest that I know of is the Air Force Condor with the spin lock tank. In .177 caliber, it is rated at 1450 FPS.

There may be one faster by I haven't see it yet.

The Condor is a PCP (Pre Charged Pneumatic) class air rifle. The .177 barrel is interchangeable with 3 different barrel lengths. In fact the rifle can be changed to .20 cal, .22 cal, and 25 caliber. There are 12 different barrels that can be change on this rifle. The basic cost for the rifle is around $600 but can climb to over $1000 quickly. This is a very accurate and deadly weapon for an air rifle.

As for pellets:

Pellets come in different weights and shapes. Light weight pellets can travel very fast but can also drift off target due to crosswind. Heavy weight pellets will fly slower but will fly straighter and have more knock down impact. Personally "Speed" is not important to me. Accuracy is! Different rifles react differently depending on the manufacture of the pellets.

PCP's require a lot of air pressure to fire them. Most use between 2000 to 3000 PSI. A simple C02 bottle only uses 80 PSI. PCP's require much more air pressure.

PCP class air rifles require a support system to charge them. A simple hand pump can cost you anywhere between $160 to over $200. If you use a Scuba tank setup it can cost you around $400 an electric pump can cost over $3000.
