The ancient Rosetta stone had the same message in ancient hieroglyphics, domitic, and ancient Greek. Rosetta was a town on the Nile River, so when the stone was discovered much later, it took on the town's name.

Since scholars knew the ancient Greek, they could compare it to the hieroglyphics, and determine what most of the hieroglyphs said.
