When crude oil is processed in the fractional distillation column it separates out different by products on the basis of their boiling points. Most of the by- products of the crude oil have a large difference in their boiling points so method of fractional distillation is viable in such a process. Fractional distillation can also be done to separate out water and acetone from a solution.
I would use distillation to separate a mixture of water and alcohol. Distillation separates the components of a solution by using the different boiling points of the components. The component with the lowest boiling point separates out first.

Fractional distillation is not the best separation method for a sand and sulfur mix. It's a very poor choice as it won't work. Use a solvent for the sulfur like dimethyl ether of, say, diethylene glycol. It will take the sulfur into solution and you can wash the solution out of the sand.

Simple distillation refers to the "simple" separation of a solid and a liquid by evaporating the liquid and collecting it after it passes through a condenser to be changed into a liquid state. Fractional distillation refers to the more complex way of separation, usually involving a liquid/liquid mixture (eg. ethanol and water). these can be separated since they both have different boiling points. When this mixture is heated the ethanol having the lowest boiling point boils off first, followed by the water. However the fractional coulomb condenses both gases back into liquid, and fall back in the flask, with time the ethanol gains enough energy to over come the fractional coulomb (this happen before the water does this since ethanol has a LOWER boiling point) and pass through the condenser, changes into a liquid and is collected.

Fractional distillation is only useful if the components are liquid, and the separation is based on boiling point. Another, more applicable method would be chromatography, either thin layer, paper, or column.
