All animals that are not in the phylum Chordata are invertebrates, with the exception of the Cephalochordata and Urochordata, which are chordates but not vertebrates.
There are all sorts of invertebrates. A vertebrate is an animal that comes complete with a spinal column. You might be surprised, I think, but this includes only about 2% of all animal species--although here would fall most animals one would picture when called upon to picture the creatures of the planet. The remaining 98%? They are all invertebrates, meaning that they have no backbone (I can think of a few people like this, but I am being silly and speaking metaphorically, here).

Many invertebrates are insects. Others populate the bottoms of the sea floor. I will give you some of the phyla, you may think through the rest. It will be valuable thinking experience.

Echinodermata - Stars, urchins, and cucumbers of the sea; Arthropoda - Here will fall your insects, your arachnids, and your crustaceans; Mollusca - Here you will find octopi, squid, and snails; Annelida - From this group you can cull both the helpful earthworm and the largely defamed leech; Cnidaria - The hive minds of the sea can be located within this category.
Invertebrate means you don't have a spine...so jellyfish, snails, etc.
Invertibres are animals without back bones. These would include any animal with an exoskeleton or outer shell like a lobster, snail, insect, or spider.
