A lady beetle is just another winged insect of the beetle class. That is they have a pair of wings and a pair of Elytra (= covering).
In New Zealand we have some black ones with red dots or splotches, and this spring I found that when they hatch out from the chrysalis they are all a butter-yellow colour for the first day and a bit!. Their ordinary colouration is to advise that they apparently taste bitter to birds.
