The Grand Canyon National Park is more than just a hole it the ground. Visitors can always find something amazing to see or do during their vacation to the park. Whether it's looking at the canyon itself, experiencing the beauty of the flora or watching any of the numerous animals busily taking care of their daily chores, it is sure to be an unforgettable event. Found living within the boundaries of the Grand Canyon National Park there have been 75 types of mammals, 50 kinds of reptiles and amphibians, 25 species of fish and over 300 different birds; not to mention the millions of insects, Spiders and scorpions creeping, crawling and buzzing around the park. Mammals Some of the larger animals seen wondering in and around the Grand Canyon include big horn sheep, mule deer, mountain lions, bobcats and coyote. To watch these incredible animals in their natural habitat is breathtaking and wondrous. However, visitors should remember that these are wild animals and though they may seem docile and friendly, they will attack if they feel threatened. Even the timid mule deer has been known to charge when frightened. There are many smaller animals who also call Grand Canyon National Park home; such as ringtails, which are closely related to raccoons, beavers, gophers, chipmunks, rabbits and bats. Two different types of squirrels can be found living in the park as well, the Abert squirrel and the Kaibab squirrel. However, the two will never be seen in the same area. This is because the Kaibab can only be found on the North Rim while the Abert lives solely on the South Rim. Most of these furry, chattering creatures have lost there fear of humans and can be found begging for food at every viewpoint and picnic area in the park, but please don't feed them. The change in their diets has caused several squirrels to die. They have also been known to bite when being fed. Birds An avid bird watcher would be hard pressed to spend time looking at the canyon during a visit to this National Park. Birds that can be seen in the area include Bald and Golden Eagles, several types of hawks including the Red-tailed Hawk, Jays of all types, Mountain Chickadees and Wild Turkeys. However, the most prominent bird found at the Grand Canyon National Park is without doubt the Raven. These giant black birds seem to spend most of their day watching the many visitors coming and going from the various sites in the park. They don't seem to fear people and almost encourage interaction with vacationers. When they are not entertaining passers they can be seen soaring playfully over the immense canyon or magically hovering in an air current. Reptiles The large Chuckwalla and the Short-horned Lizard (more commonly known as the horny toad) are just two of the many lizards found roaming throughout the Grand Canyon National Park. Most people wouldn't expect to find toads and salamanders on the list of creatures calling this desert canyon home, but they can both be seen on the edges of the Colorado River. Tadpoles swim freely through the river eddies, some becoming a meal for one of the many fish passing through on there way to Lake Mead. While most of these creatures are harmless, visitors are advised to keep an eye out for snakes. The Grand Canyon Rattler and the Diamond Back Rattler are poisonous snakes found in the area. Both have brown diamond shapes on their backs and are pink or tan in color. They blend in with their surroundings in order to catch their prey. They do not like the heat of the day and usually venture out during the cooler morning and evening hours. Like all snakes, rattle snakes are frightened of humans and will make every effort to keep clear of hikers and sight-seers. However, if they feell threatened they will strike. If you hear a rattle move out of the area quickly. Visitors are advised to contact a park ranger if they do get bitten by a rattle snake.
