The Carboniferous (Mississippian & Pennsylvanian) was not known for megafauna. There were some pretty big insects at that time. Diplovertebron reached lengths of nearly 2 feet. It was amphibious, dining on fish and smaller amphibians. Archaeothyris also reached lengths of nearly 2 feet, and was a synapsid (a precursor to modern mammals). From its teeth it is presumed to have been carnivorous.

Edaphosaurus was a late carboniferous synapsid that lived into the Permian. It grew up to 12 feet long, but it was an herbivore, not a carnivore.

The size and variety of carnivores increased substantially by the Permian.
