The animals that were fought in the Colosseum were many. Some of them are lions, tigers, hippos, rhinos, bears, leopards, and, believe it or not, ostriches. Any animal that was considered large and vicious was fair game for the arena.

Animals were used in the colisseum in a very cruel way.

They would be put in cages underground, then brought up to be killed by a warrior. They were raised to be ferocious, and they were stolen from their homes in the city zoo.

Very often wild animals were part of the entertainment for the games held at the Roman Colosseum. These could be lions, tigers, bears, bulls, and exotic animals as could be found.

The animals could be used for example to kill criminals or people such as Christians. Often gladiators were pitted against animals.

Even though most animals used for the animal hunts (venationes, singular venatio) were wild animals, not all of them were so. They included lions, elephants, bears, deer, wild goats, dogs, and rabbits.

Animal hunts at the Colosseum or any other amphitheatre (amrana for the gladiatorial game) were part of the gladiatorial games, which included many other events, besides the gladiatorial fights.

Venationes were also held at the Roman Forum, the Saepta (a massive public building in the Campus Martius, in the north of the city) and at the Circus Maximus (the chariot race track). Animal hunts held at the Circus Maximus were part of the ludi circensis, games which involved chariot races.

They put wild, exotic animals from places they weren't familiar and made two animals kill each other. Sometimes gladiators fought wild animals too.
