If the reaction is really bad, they will need more than an antihistamine, probably a steroid to help with wheezing due to swelling in their throat and difficulty breathing....

My dog suffers from Allergies and part of her treatment includes human antihistamines. Several different Vets have told me this is perfectly safe. They say some brands work better than others, depending on the dog. You have to find out by trial and error. The one thing they said to be careful about was to make sure it's only an antihistamine, not one that includes a decongestant.
