There are many more than five facts known about William Shakespeare. Here are a few, and how we know them.

1. He wrote Romeo and Juliet (It says so on the title page when it was first published in 1597)

2. He was baptised on April 26, 1564 (The church register says so)

3. He was married to Anne Hathaway (There's a record of the marriage licence dated November 27, 1582)

4. His wife gave birth to twins in 1585 called Hamnet and Judith, named after the neighbours (Church registers, and we have a number of references to Mr. and Mrs. Hamnet Sadler, the neighbours)

5. He bought a house in Stratford called New Place (Land conveyance records.)

6. He obtained a grant of arms for his father, which allowed him to call himself "gent." (The records of the government office pertaining to coats of arms)

7. He was one of an acting company called "The Lord Chamberlain's Men", who acted at court. (Court records of performances and the chartering of the company)

8. He published a poem in 1593 called Venus and Adonis (It says so on the cover)

9. He left his wife his second-best bed and other actors from the Lord Chamberlain's Men some rings in his will (We have a copy of the will)

10. He died April 23, 1616 (Church records)
