The only similarities between Athens and Sparta was that they were both Greek. Otherwise, there is no correlation, they are synonyms and completely opposite. Sparta is awesome while Athens is extremely homosexual.

There were many (although there were profoundly more notable differences.) Speaking just to the similarities, one of the two Athenian calanders was similar to that of Sparta. They both owned slaves (though in different ways.) Both stratified their social classes by their level of inclusion in the military. They worshiped many of the same Gods, participated in the four panhellenic games, and spoke greek (although Athenians spoke Attic Greek, and Spartans spoke Doric Greek.) They both had an Agora in their main city, and centered their political territory around a single polis-city structure (Sparta around Sparta, and Attica around Athens.) The more distinguishing things between the two societies are their differences, which are much more telling about their real behavior and social structures. While both had slaves, Spartans controlled their Helots in a different way than Athens, and it actually changed the way the two nations waged war (Spartans did not like to leave home because the slaves often revolted without the solders to surpress them.)

What cause the people of Athens to join forces with their rival city-statesparatain 480 bc?

Sparta and Athens were not rivals in 480 BCE - that came more than 30 years afterwards when the threat of Persia subsided. Sparta had promised to help them against the Persian attack on Athens in 490 BCE, but its army had arrived on the battlefield at Marathon too late. They remained on good terms and were natural allies in the Persian invasion in 480-479 BCE, providing the two largest contingents to the southern Greek coalition, led by Sparta, which repelled the invasion. Even if Athens had not been friendly with Sparta, it had no choice because it was a prime target of the Persian invasion and needed all the help it could get. It was not a case of Athens joining force with Sparta, it was Athens seeking the help of Sparta and its allies. They remained close allies for another 20 years, Athens helping Sparta put down a rebellion in its territory. They fell out when Athens started interfering in the affairs of the Peloponnesian League cities (which Sparta led) and Athens ignored Sparta's appeal to back off, leading to an all-out war.

What brought Sparta and Athens together as allies before they became enemies?

The Persians tried to control the incessant wars between the Greek city-states which spilt over into the Persian Empire, disrupting its peace and prosperity. Many of the Greek cities resisted this, and an alliance led by Sparta which included Athens repelled a Persian invasion. Athens also provided initial support to Sparta when it faced internal revolt, however this ended when Athens began establishing an empire of its own out of the Greek cities liberated from the Persian control.

What are characteristics of Sparta?

Sparta is authocraticHelots-serfs in middle ages; belong to land/ Spartan statePowerful, disciplined land militaryAll Spartans equal; foreigners to others considered lesser statusNo luxuries; simple, frugal, austere lifestyleindividuality not encouragedcitizenship traced the blood linesmilitary ed for boys begins at 7 years oldgirls expected to be physically fit(strong bodies=strong babies); could not live with wife until age 30ruled by oligarchy All true but i have something beterAthens or SpartaIf I had to choose which one was better, Athens or Sparta, I would say Athens. I would pick Athens because the Athenian boys and girls were treated better than in Sparta and they also got education, the people in Athens favored people and Athens had an assembly and the council of five hundred. The children in Athens were treated better than the children in Sparta. I say this because in Sparta if the baby was not healthy, they were not allowed to live or had to be a slave. In Athens, the boys went to school from the age of 6 to 14. They either went to a private or a primary school. They learned the poems by Homer and were taught how to play a lyre. They always had a man teacher. After that, they went to a higher school for 4 years and after they turned 18, they had to go to a military school for 2 more years. When they were 20 years old, they graduated. I wouldn't call myself too sporty, because I like some sports. Sparta is mostly all about things like military and sports. Me personally I would like to be educated, instead of having more freedom. It would be better to have both, but in the end I would still like to be more educated. The girls couldn't go to school but they still were taught to read and write at home.Athens favored people. Unlike Sparta, either a king or an oligarchy did not rule Athens. They had their own constitution and their own government. The Athenians were also the first ones who had the democratic constitution. A noble named Cleisthenes wrote this constitution. It was the first constitution ever written. There were also these two groups in Athens. One of them was the Assembly and the other one was called The Council of 5 Hundred. The Assembly was open to all men over 20 years old. The Assembly chose 10 generals to run the military and to serve as a judge. One of the chief was called the commander in chief. The council on the other hand was a group with 500 members. They chose the members in an easy lottery way because the people in Athens thought that they were all smart enough to hold an office. And also the rich Athenians had a chance to win over the poor Athenians. My opinion is that Athens is better than Sparta, because the Athenian children got education and were treated better than the Spartan children, the Athens favored people and they had the assembly and the Council of 5 Hundred. Hope this helped.
