Acids burn and irritate the skin.

They change;

  • Litmus from blue to red
  • Phenolphthalein from pink to colourless
  • Methyl orange and methyl red from yellow to red

They react with;

  • Metals to give hydrogen gas
  • Carbonates to give CO2
  • Alkali to give a salt and water
  • Metal oxides to give a salt and water

All have hydrogen in their formulas and they do need water or moisture to behave as an acid.

Properties of chemical acids:

  • they have a characteristically sour taste
  • they are indicated when blue litmus paper turns red
  • they have a pH less than 7
  • they form electrolytes in water
  • they produce H2 (hydrogen gas) when they react with certain metals
  • they are chemical proton donors
  • they combine with bases to form water and various salts
  • they can be corrosive in high concentrations
  • they can cause burns to organic tissues

Do these four properties describe an acid or a base?

Neither, there are no associated properties.

Is copper oxide an acid?

No. Copper oxide has no acid-base properties.

What atoms give an acid its chemical properties?

Atoms that give an acid its chemical properties depend on what type of acid is being discussed. A bronsted-lowry acid donates an H+ ion, while a Lewis acid is an electron acceptor.

What acid is important in protein synthesis?

Concentrated sulfuric acid, for its hydrophilic properties.

What are the main properties of acid base water?

Acid and base when mixed in equal concentration neutralize each other. So if the water has both in equal concentration the water will not show the properties of the acid or the base.if any one i.e. acid or base is higher in concentration than the other the water will show its properties.

Why does acid rune your skin?

Acid RUINS your skin because of the dangerous chemical properties.

What is the difference between aqueous solutions of acetic acid and nitric acid?

Nitric acid and acetic acid are different substances; the chemical properties and physical properties are also different (density of the solutions, corrosiveness, chemical reactions, dissociation, etc.).

What is asorbic acid?

Ascorbic acid is a sugar acid with antioxidant properties. Vitamin C is a form of ascorbic acid. It's formula is C6H8O6.

What happens to the corrosive properties of an acid and a base after they neutralise each other?

These corrosive properties disappear.

What gives an aqueous solution of an acid the properties of an acid?

An acid gives its properties to an aqueous solution by making free its (acidical) H+ ions (protons) and donating this to the solvent molecules: water, so H3O+ is formed.
