There are three causes of transmission impairment
1.Attenuation
- means loss of energy - cause weaker signal
- it loss energy to overcome the resistance of the medium
- amplifier is used to compensate for this loss of energy by amplifying the signal
- to show loss of energy of signal "decibels" is used
2.Delay distortion
- means signal changes their shape and size
- it occur in composite signal
3.Noise

- Thermal:-random noise of electron in the wire create extra signal
- Induced:-from motor and appliances act as transmitter antenna and medium act as receiving antenna.
- Cross talk:-same as above but in two wires
- Impulse:-seeks that result from power line,lightning
