Even if it's long been disputed that Betsy Ross made the first American Flag, she was a seamstress and an American icon. 9The flag story was revealed until 50 years after her death by her grandson. Whether or not she created the original flag, there is proof of payment that she did make flags for the US Navy in 1777. Born January1, 1752 in Philadelphia, ,Elizabeth Giscom(Ross Ashburn Claypoole) was the 8th of 17 children to Quaker parents. (She herself had 13 children.) It is believe she attended Quaker schools, where she learned needlepoint. At age 17, her father apprenticed her to an ulpholsterer, where she met her first husband, John Ross, an Anglican. Upon their marriage when Betsy was 20, she was disowned by her by her family and expelled from the (Quaker) Friends meeting house as marrying outside of her faith. She then joined the Free Quakers or "Fighting Quakers". The couple started their own ulpholstry business. Sadly John Ross died in a gunpowder explosion while in the militia in 1776. She married Joseph Ashburn, a sailor, in 1777. Her second husband was captured by the British in 1781 & died in prison a year later. In 1783, she married husband #3, John Claypoole, the man who delivered the news of her second husband's death. They were married until his death in 1817. Betsy Ross died at the age of 84 in 1836.
