What was one of Betsy Ross' life achievements?

In legend, she is remembered for sewing the first national flag of the United States.

The Betsy Ross story is without good supporting evidence; it seems to have been popularized by her grandson, 100 years later, although the story is older than that. We do know for a fact that she was a real person, she ran an upholstery shop in Philadelphia and she did make many flags during the Revolution and for many years thereafter. There were 17 such shops in Philadelphia at the time, so it is quite likely that she made one of the first US flags, if not the first.

Why do people remember Betsy Ross?

She didn't make the flag. This is a story her grandson made up in 1870. Congress gives credit to Francis Hopkinson who designed the flag. The first flag was made for the navy in 1776 and it was a basic British flag with stripes. The second flag had stars where the British flag had a cross.

Why is there not any more information on Ross Anderson the skier?

There is a book that has been out since March 2007. "Native Athletes in Action" I got the book on amazon.com and I am delighted to see Ross Anderson and his accomplishments. There are 12 other Native athletes in the book with a chapter on each one of them.

That should answer your question that there are articles and features that are out now. The website on him is very impressive as well. www.rossanderson.org

What are some basic facts about Betsy Ross?

Even if it's long been disputed that Betsy Ross made the first American Flag, she was a seamstress and an American icon. 9The flag story was revealed until 50 years after her death by her grandson. Whether or not she created the original flag, there is proof of payment that she did make flags for the US Navy in 1777. Born January1, 1752 in Philadelphia, ,Elizabeth Giscom(Ross Ashburn Claypoole) was the 8th of 17 children to Quaker parents. (She herself had 13 children.) It is believe she attended Quaker schools, where she learned needlepoint. At age 17, her father apprenticed her to an ulpholsterer, where she met her first husband, John Ross, an Anglican. Upon their marriage when Betsy was 20, she was disowned by her by her family and expelled from the (Quaker) Friends meeting house as marrying outside of her faith. She then joined the Free Quakers or "Fighting Quakers". The couple started their own ulpholstry business. Sadly John Ross died in a gunpowder explosion while in the militia in 1776. She married Joseph Ashburn, a sailor, in 1777. Her second husband was captured by the British in 1781 & died in prison a year later. In 1783, she married husband #3, John Claypoole, the man who delivered the news of her second husband's death. They were married until his death in 1817. Betsy Ross died at the age of 84 in 1836.
