Porfirio Diaz (1830-1915) was the president of Mexico and a dictator, who developed the country at the expense of human rights. During the 1910 elections, he imprisoned his rival Francisco Madero, thus sparking the first phase of the revolution.
Francisco Madero (1873-1913) was a politician who formed part of the anti-reelectionist movement. He was imprisoned by Porfirio Diaz during the 1910 elections, but his father helped him bail out and fled to San Antonio, TX. From the exile, he proclaimed the elections as null and void, and called for armed revolution against Diaz. With the help of other revolutionaries he drove out Diaz from Mexico, and was elected as president in 1911. However, a conspiracy between American ambassador Henry Lane Wilson and military general Victoriano Huerta resulted in the assasination of Madero and his vicepresident Jose Pino Suarez, sparking the second phase of the revolution.
Emiliano Zapata (1879-1919) was one of the first warlords to cooperate with Madero, rising up in arms in the central state of Morelos. He became the commander of the Division del Sur (Southern Division).
Francisco "Pancho" Villa (1878-1923) another warlord who listened to Madero's call to arms, and became commander of the Division del Norte (Northern Division) against Diaz. He is most known for riding the town of Columbus, NM and becoming the one and only foreign attacker who has ever invaded US soil.
Victoriano Huerta (1850-1916) military officer and eventual president of Mexico. Co-conspired with the American ambassador in Mexico, Henry Lane Wilson to depose Madero. This resulted in the assasination of Madero and his vicepresident Jose Pino Suarez, sparking the second phase of the revolution.

It ended in 1921 after President Venustiano Carranza was elected, many of these warlords (such as Emiliano Zapata) were killed and over 1.3 million people died.
