Although Aruba is considered to have an arid climate, an amazing diversity of plants live well on the island. Cacti and aloe vera adjust well to arid conditions and poor soil. So both proliferate on Aruba.
But Arubans are able to grow a variety of vegetables, including beans, calabash, maize, and sweet potatoes. Other interesting plants include the bellyache bush (Jatropha gossypifolia) and Spanish Flag(Lantana camara).
The Divi-divi (Caesalpinia coriaria) is Aruba's national tree.
Specifically, the tree is not just native to Aruba. Its range in fact includes other islands in the Caribbean as well as Central America, Mexico and northern South America. But it is much beloved, as a petite, plucky small tree whose mature height tends to be its maximum expected 30 feet (9 meters). Arubans fondly call the tree "Fofoti."

Specifically, the fofoti tree was chosen as a symbol for tourism advertisements by the Aruba Tourism Authority (ATA) in 1989. The first choice, the divi-divi tree(also known as watapana), appeared in tourism ads beginning in 1981. The ATA abandoned the divi-divi in favor of the fofoti, which shares the famous twisting bark which photographs appealingly in tourism ads.
