Writing is believed to have already been in use by 5000 BCE, long before any of the events in the Old Testament are thought to have taken place, although the Hebrew language does not exist in written form before the tenth century BCE.
Much of the Pentateuch was handed down orally until two separate sources wrote down separate traditions of the Israelites and the Judahites, respectively. These were subsequently redacted into a single document and eventually added to the books that were to become known collectively as the Pentateuch.
The earliest oral traditions are partly mythical, so the terms to be used for these early biblical traditions are myth and legend.
people passed down the stories of generations before them through oral tradition
All stories stem from the oral tradition, yes. We spoke before we invented writing.
why was oral tradition important before writing was invented
Nobody knows - the first fiction was never written down because we told stories long before we invented writing.
