I grew up in California and asa matter of fact I lived there for 49 years and I always considered myself a yankee but I have a friend from Washington state that says Im not a yankee. Far as I know , California was involved in the Civil war between the States and we were opposed to Slavery. ehh I think I know what I am. Sheesh. Or what I would have been if I had lived during that time. Id have been a Northern Yankee opposed to slavery.
I assume you are talking about the Civil War. First, it was a whole lot less expensive to ship Northern products down the Mississippi River, to the port of New Orleans than to ship them over the mountains to ports on the east coast. Unless the Union forces could rule the Mississippi River, they would not have the support of the people. Controlling the Mississippi River Valley kept midwesterners wanting the Union to win.
Like the rest of the country, the people of Milwaukee were shocked and horrified at the news of Dahmer's crimes. States like California, Florida and Texas have their share of killers as do most other states, but Dahmer came from the midwest. God, family and community are still the way most Midwesterners live their lives. To have a person such as Dahmer come from this environment was a hard pill to swallow. The citizens of Kansas had a similar experience when BTK was arrested. Dennis Rader lived among an unsuspecting community, was a church deacon and a loving family man. It had to have been very hard for Dahmer's and Rader's family members. They are also victims, forced into something not of their own choosing.
