Roman Catholics are only obligated to the virtue of Temperance (moderation). Since they respect that they can eat or drink any food or beverage. Fastening and/or abstinence (of meat and other rich foods) are recommended in the Holy Week, the seven days before Easter Sunday.

Catholics are not like Jews were they may not eat "unclean" things, but on Fridays during lent (the time before Easter) meat and fish are not to be eaten. The only other food requirement is not to eat 1 hour before the Catholics go to Church on Sunday.

Roman is an epithet first commonly used in England after the protestant revolt to describe the Catholic Church. It is never used by the Catholic Church.

Catholic AnswerGod pronounced all foods legitimate and so Catholics have no food requirements that way. There are limitations due to spiritual reasons, for instance, there is a one hour fast - from all food - before receiving Holy Communion. Likewise, they give up meat on Fridays to honor Our Blessed Lord's Crucifixion. Some monks give up meat from four footed animals, this is purely a spiritual discipline, though. Answer

Catholics have no food prohibitions except they may not eat meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays in Lent.

Answer

In general, Roman Catholics have no restrictions dictated by their beliefs in regard to what they can eat. They do, however, have restrictions regarding what they can eat and how much they eat during specific liturgical days or seasons.

During Lent, Catholics are restricted from eating meat (to abstain from) and encouraged to fast, (to fast means to have but two collations with one main meal throughout the day, no snacks!), on Fridays. Often Catholics remark that this law has been suspended, however this is not so, rather, a substitute option was added; if someone does not wish to fast they may perform some other penance, such as a prayer devotion. If this substitution is not done, the fast is still incumbent upon the Catholic and it is a sin to omit it. Originally Catholics were to fast all 40 days of Lent, and that not only from meat but from all animal products (eggs, butter, etc), but this discipline was relaxed over time until Fridays alone were enforced, and that until recent times, where the fast is but an option. Catholics generally try to keep the spirit of the original fast by avoiding rich and sweet foods and snacking during the penitential season.

Under pain of mortal sin, Catholics still must observe fast and abstinence on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday as they are the great penitential days of the liturgical year.

Ember days, which are no longer observed or binding upon Catholics, happen four times a year on the Wednesday, Friday and Saturday of the first week of each new season. Some Catholics, out of piety, still observe these days which call for a fast and partial abstinence, meaning they may have one meal containing meat. Piety also urges some Catholics to fast on the vigil of major feast days, another custom of old.

Fish is not considered meat and thus can be eaten on days of abstinence.

Technically, no food is forbidden in the Christian faith. However, many Christians choose not to drink alcohol. This is for personal reasons, they feel it will help to strengthen their faith.
