What is the most thickness allowed for shim installation?

As far as I have been taught there is no maximum thickness allowed for a shim. Shims can be specially made out of thicker plate to achieve the correct alignment. The only restriction I know about with shims is that there should never be more than 3 shims in one place (e.g. only 3 shims are allowed under each motor foot).

What is a construction beam?

Almost any solid horizontal structural member is considered a beam. They are usually steel or concrete and are used to transfer a vertical load imposed on the span (middle) of the beam to the ends or vertical supports of the beam. Steel beams are probably what most people think of when picturing a beam. W-sections (formerly known as I-beams, but are modified by the strength/type of steel and the cross section shapes) are the most common steel beams used. Concrete beams are often used in foundations and can be best seen above ground in parking garages everywhere. There is always a good amount of reinforcing steel in a concrete beam to carry the tension that occurs in the bottom of a beam so the concrete won't fracture.

WHAT ARE THE TYPE OF FOUNDATION?

The type of mat foundations include flat plate mat, plate thickened under columns, and two-way beam and slab. The other types are plate with pedestal, rigid frame mat, and piled raft.

What is the simply supported beam?

A simply supported beam is just that - the most simple arrangement of the structure. The beam is supported at each end, and the load is distributed in some way along its length. There is more to the application of this than might first appear, but it's the starting point for analysis. What is the load on the beam going to be? If it's a floor joist, how much is the furniture going to weigh that is placed on it? What if someone wants to put a steel safe in the middle of the span of the beam under consideration? You get the picture. But it all stems from a beam supported at the ends and having to bear a load distributed in some way along its length. Simply-supported describes the constraints imposed on the beam by its foundations. A simply supported beam cannot have any translational displacements at its support points, but no restriction is placed on rotations at the supports. Links are provided to sites where more detailed information is available.
