He wanted to institute a form of writing he called "simplified spelling." It did away with the multiple ways in which the English language forms several sounds. People did not like that idea. Interestingly, with the advent of online chatting and SMS text messaging via cell phones, people have moved in the direction Roosevelt wanted of their own accord.
You are a bit confused. It was Richard M. Nixon who resigned, not Gerald Ford. Ford lost an election to Jimmy Carter, but he did not resign. As President Ford did not do very much, but he is best remembered for having pardoned Nixon. Whether that pardon constitutes an accomplishment or a failure remains a matter of debate (personally I consider it to be a failure).
His two major accomplishments seem to be the passage of the Pendleton Civil Service Act in January of 1883 and the modernization of the United States Navy. He also redecorated the White House.
