On booting into linux, (I use Ubuntu 12.10) a Graphic User Interface (GUI) will appear, which is the desktop.
Pressing the Ctrl and Alt keys and tapping the letter "T" key will open a terminal window ready to take your text commands.

Apart from the above, there are "Virtual Terminals" available.
Press down the Ctrl and Alt keys and a function key (f1 to f6) and the GUI will disappear and you will enter a black virtual screen. After logging on with your username and password, you can type commands. To escape from a virtual terminal press Ctrl and Alt and f7, and you will be returned to the GUI desktop.
