Medusa was originally a golden-haired and very beautiful maiden, who was a priestess of Athena, and was devoted to a life of purity. However, she was loved by Poseidon, whom she loved in return. She ignored her vows of purity and became united to him in marriage. She was punished by the goddess Athena. Each wavy lock of the beautiful hair which had so charmed her husband, was changed into a venomous snake, her once gentle, loving, and inspiring eyes now became blood-shot, furious orbs, while her former bright complexion, and milk-white skin became a disgusting greenish tint. Seeing herself transformed into a sickening object, Medusa fled from her home, never to return. Wandering about, despised, feared, and neglected by all the world, she now developed into a character, worthy of her appearance. In her despair she fled to Africa, where, as she passed restlessly from place to place, infant snakes dropped from her hair. With the curse of Athena upon her, she turned into stone whoever she looked upon, until at last, after a life of nameless misery, Perseus beheaded her, and gave her head to Athena, which Athena put on her armor.
