The Cougar is one of the most adaptable animals around. From the mountains in Colorado all the way to Florida. Depending on the location and environment decides a lot for these big cats. This big cats have many names--mountain lion, puma, cougar, catamount, panther ect. Where I live they refer to this cat as a panther. In Colorado and California for example they call this cat a mountain lion or cougar. In the hills of Tennessee they have been called catamounts. In Florida they call this animal the Florida Panther. In the northern parts this cat is larger and has thicker fur -- in the warmer areas of the US and South America the animals are smaller and the fur is not as dense. The Florida Panther is a sub species of the puma. These animals range in color most are tawny some are a reddish brown. No melanistic (black) cougars, panthers ect. have ever been documented. Many sightings have occured though. Go online and check out The Cougar Network and www.easternpuma.com--these sights will be very helpful with your questions. Hope this information will be helpful.

Cougars adapt to their environment in that they blend in seemlessly with their environment, cougars that live in areas that get cold in the winter grow in a heavy winter coat to stay warm throughout the winter, they have retractable claws to be able to adeptly climb trees and take down large prey, they have large, rather soft paws to allow them to stay quiet as they stalk, they have a long tail to help with balance, large canines to help with killing prey and they can jump very high, also to take down prey. (This list is not by any means complete).

In Southern California, they survive by killing and eating most any animal they choose. They choose not to try to eat black bear or grizzly bear and adult cattle or horse, but everything else on two or four legs (including people on two wheels) is fair game. Due to both increasing populations from being a protected species and our incurision into their habatat, which is most of the North Americain continent except the tropics below Mexico and the Yucatan, encounters and confilct with humans are becoming more frequent. One young male cat was reported to be feeding on pets both dogs and cats in San Calmente Canyon, a dedicated open space park in San Diego, CA. bordered by the I-5 freeway in the west, the I-805 Freeway to the east and State Route 52 to the north, to the south is the community of Clairemont Mesa where many homes backyards are at the top of the canyon, across the I-5 Freeway less than one mile to the west is the City of La Jolla, CA. and the Pacific Ocean.

A cougar can leap off the ground 6 meters. They are good climbers and swimmers, though they'ed rather stay out of water. Cougars have excellent hearing and vision and olfacation. Cougars use these to catch their pray. They jump on the prey's back, bite their neck to kill the prey. They usaully drag the prey to a sheltered place and will be partially consumed.

Big cats mostly survive by staying away from humans!

Cougars, especially, are very secretive animals and the Eastern Cougar was actually believed to be extinct until very recently. They live way up in the mountains, in secluded areas, and eat small animals like mice and rabbits. They also hunt larger prey like deer and even the occasional calf or sheep. They have thick fur to protect them from the weather and the cold, and the fur is perfectly camouflaged to hide them on the rocky slopes of the mountains.
