Self-medication is typically hazardous when you don't know what the results will be of a particular mix of drugs, and can be fatal. You should ALWAYS talk to you doctor before attempting to medicate yourself. However, self-medicating over the counter drugs in their advised dosage and without combining can be fine, such as taking Tylonel or cold medicine. As long as you stay within the guidelines it should be alright to do so. But consult your doctor before doing so. Answer 1 is good, but left out one important point. That point is that any given symptom can be caused by possibly dozens of different medical problems, and we [you and I] are NOT capable of determining [DIAGNOSING] WHAT is causing the symptom. The problem with self-medication is that it is based on SELF-DIAGNOSIS !!!!! Also, the products available for self-medication are mostly designed and intended to only TREAT THE SYMPTOM of a minor problem until it goes away on it's own, and is NOT designed or intended to treat the cause. If the cause of the problem is minor, then an error in self-diagnosis and self-medication is no big deal, as our resulting self-medication just may not work. On the other hand however, IF the symptom is caused by some really bad and dangerous medical problem, and we self-diagnose and self-medicate, THEN the problem will not receive proper treatment, and could progress until it became UNTREATABLE !!! If you insist on self-diagnosis and treatment, then carefully watch for signs of continuing symptoms which either don't respond to the self-medication, OR which return repeatedly. When you become aware of this, then it could be critical that you have professional diagnosis by a Physician, as soon as possible !!!!!
