Smog is smoke from houses with coal fires and industrial chimneys that has become mixed with water vapour (low clouds) and is held close to the ground by there being little wind to blow it away. The UK brought in the Clean Air Act that created smokeless zones. This act helped to reduce the occurrences of the dense (almost yellowish) smog that was around when I was a child in Liverpool, England. Smog was the cause of many deaths due to respiratory problems, especially in the old and very young.
