There were many different marine reptiles during the 'age of the dinosaurs' (the mesozoic era - comprising the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods).

These marine reptiles are collectively known as 'sauropterygia' (lizards with flippers) and should not be confused with dinosaurs.

The best known of these is the 'plesiosaur'.

There were many types of ancient marine reptiles. Here are a few:

1. Mesosaurus was one of the first marine reptiles. It had many thin, tiny teeth that it used to filter plankton from the water.

2. Icthyosaurs were marine reptiles that had a long snout and vertical tail fins. They looked a lot like dolphins and fish.

3. Plesiosaurs were marine reptiles that either had a short or long neck. They used their flippers for propulsion.

4. Thalattosuchians were marine relatives of crocodillians. Some of them had tail fins.

5. Mosasaurs were carnivorous, marine lizards that grew up to 50 ft long (depending on the species).

Do dinosaurs still live under water?

Dinosaurs never lived underwater. There were marine reptiles that are sometimes inaccurately called dinosaurs; these include icthyosaurs, mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, and pliosaurs. All of these are extinct. There are a few marine reptiles alive today, though. These are sea turtles, sea snakes, and the semi-aquatic marine iguana.
