How long does a caterpillar stay in a chrysalis?

The caterpillar remains in the chrysalis for as little as 2 weeks as the body is transformed into the body of a butterfly. Some species sit over winter, and the butterfly emerges in the spring. A few days before the emergence of the adult butterfly, the chrysalis becomes translucent, and the butterfly coloring and wings are visible though the chrysalis. The chrysalis splits, and a new butterfly is born.

Butterflies liquefy in cocoon?

A butterfly does not spin a cocoon, it's pupa is called a chrysalis. A moth, however, spins a protective silk case which is known as a cocoon. A caterpillar spins either a cocoon or a chrysalis depending on its breed. After being incased it will be its transfirmation into a butterfly. The time spent in the chrysalis is different for each species of Butterfly, but when the metormorphosis is complete the new butterfly will break its way out of the casing of the chrysalis and spread its new wings for the first time. The butterfly will genrally cling onto the side of the chrysalis for an hour or so, to allow their wings to dry out, and enable them to fly for the first time. The time that a lava spends in pupation may be brief, as with the Monarch butterfly who only stay in a chrysalis for 2 weeks. However, some species enter into a dormant state when they start pupation and stay in this stage until the appropriate season. They mostly stay dormant through the winter months or during the dry season in the tropics.

Does meconium still come out of the butterfly after it is out of the chrysalis?

Not after the abdomen has shrunken and the wings have stiffened. Meconium is only secreted just after emerging when the abdomen is still ´fat´.

What do we call an adult butterfly?

The adult is also known as an imago, they have fully developed wings and are sexually mature. When the adult first emerges from the chrysalis, their wings are wet and crinkled. They are able to pump fluid through their bodies into the wings to help them expand. Once their wings are fully expanded, they may take 30 minutes up to a couple hours to dry. They are then ready to fly. Many times right after the butterfly emerges from the chrysalis there will be a colored fluid that is released from the chrysalis, this is meconium, excess fluid the butterfly did not need. The adult butterfly's primary instinctive behavior in life is to search for a mate of the same species and produce viable offspring to carry on their genes. This includes making sure the eggs are laid on the correct host plant. Some butterflies lay their eggs in groups, while others lay them singly because the first instar caterpillars can be cannibalistic and will eat the other eggs.

Show the difference between a cocoon and a chrysalis?

No. Butterflies and Moths lay eggs. These eggs hatch out into caterpillars which eat plany material and grow. Once they are full size, the caterpillars make a cocoon/chrysalis then this cocoon/chrysalis hatches out into a new butterfly or moth. To be more clear, butterfly caterpillars do not make a cocoon; they pupate (transform into a chrysalis) which then hatches into the butterfly However, some moth caterpillers also spin a cocoon round themselves (made of silk) before pupating. Before pupating the caterpiller will normally move off its food source to find somewhere safe and hidden to pupate.

What is that Chris thing?

Before a caterpillar becomes a butterfly, is wraps itself in a cocoon or chrysalis. Depending on the butterfly, it won't come out for 2-5 weeks. When it finally emerges, its wings are wet and take about a day to dry before they can fly properly.
