If you mean from long ago, these were used instead of a toilet. There was no indoor Plumbing. In the morning, they were dumped into the street. No, they did not even know that there were bacteria. That is, the pot served as an indoor toilet. Some are elaborate, others are simple large mouth containers. When I was growing up slop jars were the chamber pots. It wasn't so long ago that lots of people used them. I don't know if all rural/farm homes have indoor plumbing today but I doubt it and anywhere they don't you can bet they still uses slop jars (common man's chamber pot). I understand they are still widely used in North Korea.
