First of all it"s Divorce- not the way you spelled it. Abyssmal! it was considered a social malady on the level of- well- being born out of Wedlock. The whole concept of Divorce was blasted away at in the Church schools, not to mention the Sunday Schools. the negative title ( broken Home) was used a good deal in a derogatory sense ( I thought they were talking about structural damage from fires or ceiling collapses, etc)- For a time the children of divorced parents could not in any cases become members of the Clergy- the standard was somewhat lower for female religious, oddly. To this day- a Divorcee-even if her husband is deceased and having no dependent children- cannot become a Nun, but a widow in certain circumstances, can. there was something of a ( rerun) movement that people thought that the widowed Jacqueline Kennedy might go into the Convent- this did not happen- she married Onassis- and was that a Tidal Wave! an unreal attitude was all over the church that divorce fostered crimes, delinquency ( juvenile and adult)- substance abuse ( maybe they got that one on backwards- substance abuse could foster divorce) all in all it was a Bete Noir ( black Beast) or social boogeyman. this attitude is still around but has been soft-pedaled since Abortion got big-gun billing ( since l97l, though the anti-abortion encyclical Humana Vitae (Human Life, natch( came out in l968. well Divorce is still a vice, so to speak.
