A WAN may use a similar topology as a LAN, but it uses different protocols to send packets over a wide distance. A LAN is much more limited in the distance it can send information to.
A WAN uses point-to-point connections over a wide distance, where a LAN does not cover a wide distance and will not send packets from one network to another. To get a packet from one network to another a router must be used inbetween the two networks.
A wide area network (WAN) - enables companies to have a closed system, that is typically spread over a number of buildings that may be either next door -or in Another Country. Communication over the WAN is usually fast (as it's not relying on shared internet speeds) - secure (because it cannot be accessed from outside the net, and doesn't rely on people having to answer telephones.
From the point of view of a company which hires the services, a WAN (wide area network) typically has the following three distinguishing features. Compared to a LAN, a WAN:* Works over much larger distances.
* Typically has a lower bandwidth.
* However, the MOST distinguishing characteristic of a WAN is that, whereas in a LAN a company will be the owner of its own equipment (routers, switches, cables, etc.), in a WAN the company will hire services from a third-party (an ISP).
It is simply not economically feasible - nor legal - for each individual company to tend its own cables from one side of a country to another.

First of all, WAN is an acronym for Wider Area Network. A good example of a WAN is the Internet. The basic components of a WAN would be routers, satellites, ISP mainframes, transmission media (Fiber Optics backbones, Power lines, network cables etc....i suppose satellites would also be classed as a transmission media). The most essential of an WAN Component can be Modems / Routers / Router abd Firewalls.
