In its simplest explanation, the Hall Effect sensor operates as an analog (varies in voltage in this case) transducer (a transducer is a device that converts a signal in one form of energy to another form of energy e.g. mechanical movement into voltage) so it converts mechanical force such as a conductor spinning/moving in to energy/voltage by means of the conductor cutting through a magnetic field creating a voltage, but this voltage can vary according to a magnetic field generated, hence the name an analog transducer.

Hall effect sensors are used for proximity switching, positioning, speed detection, and current sensing applications a Hall sensor can be combined with circuitry that allows the device to act in a digital (on/off) mode, and may be called a switch in this configuration.

Hall sensors are commonly used to time the speed of wheels and shafts, such as for internal combustion engine ignition timing, tachometers and anti-lock braking systems. They are used in brushless DC electric motors to detect the position of the permanent magnet. In the pictured wheel with two equally spaced magnets, the voltage from the sensor will peak twice for each revolution.
