Both Paul and James speak to 'dead' works but it is the source of much confusion in the world of Christianity.

In Hebrews 6:1 and 9:14, Paul is referring to the rituals of the Mosaic Law. These practices can not save a person. Our placing our faith in what has already served its purpose and has now passed on - primarily now a guide to a Christian -is not what we Christians are to do. For the Christian is now a 'new creature' having their minds changed/in-tuned with Christ's mind. The Law is good (1 Timothy 1:8) but is weak because we are weak and have a sinful nature (propensity or predisposition to sin as Romans 8:3 reflects). In effect then, the message for eternal life is not lifeless works that cannot save anyone, but faith directed towards God.

James approaches this question from the other angle in James 2. We cannot go around saying we do not need to do God's good works (Ephesians 2:9-11) just because we now have faith. These are called 'freeloaders.' We cannot stop good works - the natural offshoot of our new faith - simply because they do not save a person. That would be severing the 'effect' from the 'cause.' Jesus spoke about this in Luke 6:43-44 as a suggested reading.

Lastly, in the eras of the Churh, Christ speaks to the Church at Sardi as the 'Dead Church' in Revelation 3:1-3.

What are the two dimensions of Catholic Faith?

This question could be taken in many ways, but I think the most important thing to realize about Christianity is the necessity of faith AND works. As the Bible tells us that faith without works is a dead faith which will not save us. And that all the great figures of the Bible were saved by their works. Read the letter of St. James, and the letter to the Hebrews.
