There are different types of research papers:
• Case studies.
• Compare and contrast papers.
• Argumentative papers.
• Analytical papers.
• Cause and effect papers.
• Reports.
• Subject-based papers.
• Survey research and data analysis.
Case studies
A case study is an in-depth study of a particular situation rather than a statistical survey. It is a narrow
method of reporting on a topic or situation often giving context to other research.
Compare and contrast papers
A compare and contrast research paper discusses the pros and cons of two pieces of work. The writer needs
to do enough research on both pieces of work to be able to make comparisons and contrasts critically.
Argumentative papers
This is a paper which contains arguments, the writer's personal points of view and a solution. It is often about
a controversial issue. It will contain a balanced argument from both sides. If the writer is going to stay neutral
he should make sure that he does not write more points for one side than the other.
Analytical papers
This type of research contains various sources of information that analyse different points of view on a given
topic. The writer has a broad and open approach, studying a wide variety of resources, and coming to a
general conclusion at the end.
Cause and effect papers
This type of research is often used in business or education. The writer analyses the reason for the probable
(cause) and the result (effect).
Reports
Reports are one of the professional types of research papers. There are different types of reports:
• project reports
• annual reports
• quarterly or half-yearly reports
• focus group reports.
Subject-based papers
This is the most common type of paper written by learners in schools and colleges. Subject-based papers
are usually on a given topic decided by the teacher or tutor. A student should research the topic, looking at a
variety of resources and then write the paper. Different types of research
Survey research
The researcher collects the information, analyses the data and reports the results. Examples of survey
research are:
• public opinion polls
• mail surveys
• telephone surveys
• consumer surveys.
KNOW WHAT YOU WRITE.
One of the most important elements of an A+ Grade paper is the understanding you the student have of these different research papers types and your ability to write each type of paper according to the expected paper format. While the type of research paper is usually stated in the paper requirement information provided by your tutor, there are times when the paper type will be implied rather than directly stated and this is where an accurate interpretation of the paper requirements is so important to a good passing grade. In the paragraphs below are some hints on what may be expected in seven different research paper types, which are:
ontain short factual sentences devoid of emotion. Reports usually include an executive summary that takes the place of an abstract in this type of research paper, as well as supporting evidence in the form of appendix, graphs and tables.
Interpretive papersINTERPRETIVE PAPERS are often required by tutors in literature, humanities and social sciences and they require the student to use the theoretical knowledge gained in a course of study to a particular case study example such as a piece of art or a poem in literary fields; a business situation in a management course; or a psychological case profile in either sociology or psychology fields. The key element of an interpretive paper is evidence that the student has written the paper based on an established theoretical framework and has used supporting data to back up the thesis statement and findings of the paper. The variety of formats and genres for research papers can appear a bit daunting at first glance but as you work through this course you will come to understand the fundamental differences in these paper types, and how you can structure your research papers to best showcase the expert information you have acquired through your course of learning. As most university grade courses include up to 80% of their marking component on comprehensive answer (read 'correct usage of a research paper type'), it is really important that you correctly define what type of paper you are to write and what you need to include in it. In my next lesson, I will give you specific templates for ALL types of papers you will need. With these templates, you will be able to write research papers of any type without an effort. I hope your participation in this course can realistically help you achieve the A+ grade you want to graduate with.
When it comes to formulating a research paper, students should always be aware of the many parts of a research paper they need to include. Some professors will outline which parts of a research paper they expect their students to include. However, if a professor does not provide specifics, then it may be up to the students to determine which parts of research papers they should include in their assignments.
Basically, the parts of research papers that should always be included are the cover page, introduction, body, and conclusion. Depending on the type of research paper, some students may also need to include an abstract, appendix, acknowledgements, and a reference section.
The cover page of the research paper should be formatted according to the style guide that a professor has assigned, which may be MLA or APA style. This is the part of a research paper that the professor will see first, so it should be neat and tidy and in accordance with normal style guidelines.
The next parts of a research paper that are important are the introductory paragraph and the thesis statement. The thesis statement is a one-sentence statement that gives a preview of what the research paper will state. This statement should appear in the first or last sentence of the introduction. The introduction should usually be just one paragraph. It may be longer for longer paper.
The body of papers includes the parts of research papersthat provide new information. Each paragraph should share new information that should support the thesis. This information will be tied together in the conclusion, which is the last paragraph or two paragraphs of the paper.
Students need to be aware that the parts of a research paper should all be basically the same. However, the parts of a research paper differ from the parts of a thesis or the parts of a dissertation in some cases. Thesis papers and dissertations are longer than research papers in most cases and should, therefore, contain longer parts, even if the parts are the same. Also, thesis papers and dissertations may contain methodologies, discussions, and more parts than a research paper.
