Opium is a drug - one of the World's oldest, longest, and most widely used drugs. Also, many other drugs are derived from opium, such as morphine, heroin, and all other opiates. Opioids - meaning "opiate-shaped" or "opiate-like" - are synthetic drugs, modeled on the types of molecules found in opium.
Narcotics are opium derivatives and synthetic compounds that mimic the effects of opium derived drugs, such as Demerol (meperidine) and Methadone (dolphine).
Heroin originates from the opium poppy plant. A poppy plant pod contains a white syrup which when dried forms what is known as opium. It is from opium that among other drugs heroin is derived.

Vicodin and Percocet are both synthetic opioid drugs derived from the Opium Poppy plant. Both drugs have euphoriant, pain-relieving and sedative effects. Both drugs come in combination with acetaminophen (Tylenol). Both are addictive.
In medicine, drugs derived or synthesized from alkaloids of the opium poppy plant are known as opiates. Morphine and codiene are examples of opiates.
