Energy resources are natural sources of energy, either directly or as the fuel used for generating electricity in a steam turbine. Some energy resources are wood, coal, crude oil, natural gas, uranium, solar power, wind power, water power and ground heat (terrestrial thermal energy). Perhaps the most effective way to cause a decrease in the use of an energy resource in the short term is to make an alternative energy resource at least as convenient but less expensive. More important, and probably more effective in the long term, is for each individual to do his/her part in causing a reduction in the use of energy resources. Such acts of conservation include, but are not limited to, reducing your use of heating and air conditioning, taking shorter showers, choosing more efficient appliances (like gas driers and water heaters instead of electric), switching from incandescent or fluorescent lighting to LEDs (light-emitting diodes), turning off the light when you're the last to leave a room, and making your own compost instead of using store-bought fertilizer.
