Environmental issues are subjects, problems or controversies that relate to impairment or improvement of the air, water, soil, ecosystems, or to the impact of people on them.

Some environmental issues are climate change, waste disposal, genetic pollution, toxic waste, loss of coral reefs, and habitat destruction.

what is the issue being discussed in this statement? "I think industries should be required to clean up the wastewaer they discharge into this river, even if it does mean more expense for the industries. If they cannot afford to do it, they should shut down or cut back on production."

  1. There are as many environmental impacts as there are sources of pollution, ways land and water are used, and the way Natural Resources are treated. Here is a brief summary of some environmental impacts that occur when we use fossil fuels, like coal, oil and natural gas.

Climate Change Climate change is caused by the build-up of "greenhouse gases" in the atmosphere that create a kind of atmospheric blanket that traps an excessive amount of heat on Earth, rather than allowing it to be released into space. As temperatures on Earth rise, weather patterns are changing significantly. Catastrophic weather events like Super Storm Sandy and Hurricane Katrina have been attributed to climate change, as have increasing droughts, tornadoes, floods, and extreme snowfall.

Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide and methane, among other gases. Most scientists believe that the excess build-up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is due to human activity. Carbon dioxide is emitted when we burn fossil fuels: coal, oil or natural gas. Methane is emitted by livestock, for example.

Experts believe we can reduce the impact of climate change by using energy more efficiently and by switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy like solar and wind.

Air pollution - Fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas contain chemical compounds that get released into the atmosphere when the fuels are burned. Those compounds include carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrous oxides, as well as mercury. The combination of many of these compounds creates smog. Smog and other kinds of air pollution contribute to asthma, respiratory failure and even heart attacks.

As with climate change, air pollution impacts can be significantly reduced by burning less fossil fuel and by shifting to cleaner energy sources. Driving less and driving more fuel efficient cars, saving energy at home and at work, and improving energy efficiency at power plants and manufacturing facilities are also important ways to reduce air pollution impacts.

Water pollution - Using oil creates several serious environmental impacts related to water. Drilling oil is often done "off shore" in places like the Gulf of Mexico or off the coast of California or Alaska. Accidents occur frequently, releasing crude oil into the oceans, where it can seriously harm birds, fish, and other animals that live in the sea. Even when drilling occurs on land, accidents can send oil into lakes and streams and contaminate ground water. The explosion of the BP drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico is the most recent example of water pollution impacts related to oil drilling, but every day there are oil spills that contaminate our water resources.

Installing more safety equipment on oil drilling operations will help reduce water pollution impacts somewhat. Enforcing existing federal and state regulations related to water pollution impacts from oil production is also critical. Overall, the less oil we use, the more we can reduce the environmental impacts related to oil production and distribution.

To understand the human impact with the environment one should visit uninhabited areas of some Islands in the sea. You can realize how nature keeps balance in ecological services and healthy environment. By and large the human impact on environment is detrimental.

How can you overcome the use of energy in our environment?

That sounds as if you want to stop using energy. That's not possible - we need energy to survive. We (humans) can reduce our use of energy, and we can try to reduce the environmental impact of the energy we do use.
