"-ing" forms of verbs. In conjunction with a conjugation of the verb "to be" and sometimes even other helping verbs, present participles form "progressive tenses":
I was WALKING. (past progressive) Thou art SLEEPING. (present progressive) He will be CLIMBING. (future progressive)
And note that when you use present participles as nouns, they are often called gerunds:
WALKING is fun. SLEEPING is healthy. CLIMBING can lead to falling off cliffs.
