Proper manners include, but are not limited to:
-Excusing yourself from the table
-Asking to pass something instead of reaching
-Following rules and instructions
-Excusing yourself during a personal matter (need to blow your nose, go to the bathroom, etc.)
Manners and Etiquette are a broad category and cover a lot of situations.
Etiquette: This is a set of rules various parts of the world follow. These 'rules' are little things that tell you what is proper. Ex: You use different types of knifes and forks for different types of food. This shows proper etiquette. It is not bad manners to use your salad knife to cut your fish, you would just not be following the etiquette. Manners: Manners are what you do in a specific way to be polite, courteous, etc. showing proper manners means making the person around you not feel bad. Ex: You say please and thank you show good manners. You are not 'showing etiquette' while doing this. Note: Sometimes showing improper etiquette CAN make you show bad manners. Ex: It is in the etiquette rules to congratulate the bride and groom during the wedding. Not doing this also shows bad manners.
* It depends on who you are giving the book too. If you are giving it to a teen in the family it's fine, but if you are giving it to a friend or girlfriend or even a boyfriend it's not a good idea as they may think you are putting down their manners. Manners today are extremely lax, but, it's a good idea to learn proper etiquette for future use.
If you display proper etiquette, good manners, and a kind personality towards other people, they will do the same to you. Good manners describe how good of a person you are, and showing manners shows you are a caring and kind person. Simple acts of etiquette and kindness are vital- holding open the door for a stranger, helping someone in need, etc.
There are no disadvantages of using proper etiquette. Individuals can be themselves around their family or friends, but out in society whether it's going to school; working going to special events one should know proper etiquette (manners.) The advantages are that your personality mixed with proper etiquette tells another person that you are a well polished person and it shows you care how you act in public situations. Many individuals will take more notice to a person that cares about etiquette (their own manners) and often good opportunities may come their way whether it's for entertainment purposes or possibly a good job offered to a person.
