  1. Shabbat is the Jewish day of Rest
  2. It falls on the seventh day of the week (Saturday)
  3. It actually begins Friday night at sundown and ends Saturday night at sundown
  4. Shabbat (שבת) literally means "ceasing". It is a day to stop your normal activities and focus on food, family, rest, prayer and study.
  5. Orthodox (and some non-Orthodox) Jews follow 39 prohibitions on Shabbat, such as refraining from work, using fire or electricity, carrying, driving and other activities.
  6. Most non-Orthodox Jews (and some Jews that identify as Orthodox) do not follow some or all of these laws, but still set Shabbat aside as a special day for family, friends, and synagogue.
  7. Shabbat is the only Jewish holiday that occurs every week.
  8. Shabbat is the holiest day on the Jewish calendar. It is even considered more holy than Yom Kippur.
