The Red Scare was a period in which Americans feared that Communists would try to achieve world domination. People were afraid this would be done by infiltrating free governments and gaining control of their countries. People were also afraid of nuclear attack by Communist powers. The fear began soon after W W II ended and the Russians made their intentions clear in Eastern Europe. It grew during the Korean War and lasted until the USSR split up and Germany was re-united.
