1. Saber toothed cats all belong to Machairodontinae, a subfamily of the Felidae (the cat family).
2. Machairodontinae evolved around 28 million years ago, and became extinct only 10,000 years ago.
3. Fossils of saber toothed cats have been found on all continents except Australia and Antarctica.
4. One of the most famous genera of saber toothed cats was Smilodon.
5. Smilodon hunted big game animals like bison, deer, and even mammoths and possibly giant ground sloths.
6. Some fossil evidence suggests that Smilodon lived in packs.
7. Smilodon wasn't a fast runner, but they did have incredible upper body strength.
8. Smilodon had a weaker bite force than modern cats. Instead of biting their prey, they killed it by opening their mouth 90 degrees and then "stabbing" their long canine teeth into the throat of their prey, using their strong neck muscles.
There were three recognized species of Smilodon, or sabertoothed cat. The largest was Smilodon Populator, at over 800 pounds, the largest cat that ever lived.
