What was the sound military advice given to Confederate President Jefferson Davis by a Virginia farmer?

In February of 1962, Jefferson Davis received a letter written by a Virginian farmer concerning his ideas on how to protect the Southern cause. The man was David J. Houston who had five sons enlisted in the Confederate army. His advice was sound and much of it was used by the South. Houston noted that it was impossible to defend all the Southern territory from Union attacks. There was just too much territory to protect. His advice was to abandon that strategy and instead select important places that did require defending and have them linked by railway to concentrate forces when needed. Davis understood that and began to implement much of Houston's ideas.

Who did not like Jefferson Davis?

General Joseph E. Johnston feuded with Davis throughout the war - at some cost to the effectiveness of the Confederate war effort. Johnston believed he should have been ranked highest of the five new Full Generals of the Confederate States Army, but Davis had ranked him only fourth, on the grounds that his most recent service had been at a desk and not in the line. Davis (an ex-regular officer) also disagreed sharply with Johnston on tactical matters, and the Union success at Vicksburg was made easier by the conflicting orders the garrison commander was receiving from Davis and Johnston.
